Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
Library
Library Collection
The Library and Information Centre of ARI is one of the key reference and information centre for researchers in life sciences. It is primarily meant for the use of its research staff and students. However, it is regularly used and consulted by many research workers, teaching staff of various colleges and universities. The Library had a modest beginning starting with the generous donation of entire collection of books, rare back volumes, periodicals and reference works especially in German by Prof. S.P.Agharkar. Since then books, periodicals and other reading material have been continuously added. At present, it is a well equipped state-of-the-art information technology facility for print as well electronic resources.
An important feature of the Library is the availability of the complete set of Biological Abstracts since the publication of the first issue till the year 2000. The Library has ‘Ekaswa-A’ and ‘Ekaswa-B’ in CD-ROM format, which gives information on Indian patents. The Library is in process of providing an online access to database on foreign patents. The Library subscribes to scientific databases for accessing latest scientific literature. An on-line access has been provided to Web to Science, Selected Science Direct Collections, and CAB databases e.g. Soybean Abstracts. It also subscribes to various foreign and Indian periodicals in print format. The collection of books and bound volumes exceeds 27,000. The Library also has a unique collection of geological maps, atlases, microfilms/ microfisches. It is also a depository of publications, theses, and annual reports of the Institute. The Library is in the process of digitalizing collection of reprints, annual reports and theses of the Institute. The Library has developed databases of books, bound volumes of periodicals and ARI-MACS publications.

Information Technology
The main objective of Library and Information Centre is to strengthen its documentation and information dissemination services with the help of computer. The use of computers in Library started in the year 1991 with the aim to develop various bibliographic databases useful to the scientists. The E-mail service was set up in the year 1995 to facilitate and expedite scientific communication. Subsequently, the Internet facility was set up in the year 1999 to provide access to scientific literature available on the internet. The website of the Institute (www.aripune.org) was developed and launched in the same year. It is maintained by the library. Broadband connection of 1 Mbps bandwidth has been set up in the year 2006 to provide faster access to Internet. Computer systems are installed in the reading hall of the library to provide broadband internet facility.
The computerization of Library started in the year 1991. Presently, there are dedicated computers to carry each function of the Library separately. All the computers in the Library are connected to form internal library network, which is also a part of main LAN of the institute. Windows version of the library software is available to provide a web-based platform. The library catalogue is available online through Web OPAC and most of the routine library activities are computerized. The barcode system is routinely use in the Library for issuing and receiving of books.
Information Services
The Library offers Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI), Current Awareness Service (CAS), Reference Service, and Inter-library-loan. It brings out article alert list every month. Newspaper clippings on various topics of scientific interest are regularly displayed and circulated. It brings out list of additions every month and cumulative list annually. It provides information regarding forthcoming conferences, seminars, symposia. It also helps the scientists in planning and carrying out online search of scientific information. The Library complies bibliographies on various subjects, review articles, and cumulative subject index of articles. An up to date bibliographical list of MACS-ARI research papers, published since 1946, has been compiled and published by the Library.
NKRC
The Library and Information Centre is a participating member in the National Knowledge Resource Consortium (NKRC). NKRC was established in year 2009, is a network of libraries and information centres of 39 CSIR and 24 DST institutes. NKRC’s origin goes back to the year 2001, when the CSIR set up the Electronic Journals Consortium to provide access to 1200 odd journals of Elsevier Science to all its users. Over a period of time, the Consortium not only grew in terms of the number of resources but also in terms of the number of users as more like-minded institutes evinced interest to join the Consortium.
Today, NKRC facilitates access to 5,000+ e-journals of all major publishers, patents, standards, citation and bibliographic databases. Apart from licensed resources, NKRC is also a single point entity that provides its users with access to a multitude of open access resources. The Consortium envisions emerging as a leader to serve the R&D sector with much needed information to strengthen the research and development system in the country.
